Travelers, homeless and unstable get counted in Cape Coast

Travelers, patients on admission, the homeless, and unstable have been enumerated during the Census Night in Cape Coast as part of the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).

The census night is the reference point of the (PHC) to help enumerate people with no specific homes, those passing the night in hotels, markets, inmates of police cells, and floaters.

Enumerators from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) were at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Police Station, hotels and guest houses, and the Abura Market to do the counting.

After monitoring the exercise, Mr Jacob Andoh, the Central Regional Field Supervisor of the GSS, told the media that all enumerated persons would be issued with certificates to prevent double counting.

He said 153 enumerators had been deployed to the Cape Coast North and South areas for the exercise.

He said all other persons would be counted from Monday, June 28, and urged the public to cooperate with officials to generate the accurate data for national development.

“We entreat you to be patient with our enumerators, go through the questions carefully, you would be guided so as to provide your answers with all honesty,” he said.

Mr Ebenezer Ohene Tuffour, An Enumerating Supervisor, said the enumeration had so far been good and was happy with the cooperation of nurses and receptionists on duty.

At the Hospital, the Ghana News Agency observed that some patients were unable to speak well while others were unconscious and so the inability of the enumerators to elicit information from them.

Mr Jeffrey Acheampong, who was enumerated at a hotel, said the questions were pretty basic, adding; “I’m excited to be counted because it’s necessary for the country to keep track of its population”.

The Census Night is the official enumeration of all persons in a country at a specified time.

The enumeration also implies the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication and dissemination of demographic, social and economic statistics relating to the population.

The census is carried out every decade to give a comprehensive picture of the social and living conditions of people in the country.
