Six Suspects Escape from Police Cells as Nkoranza Youth Clash with Police

At 1am on 26th April 2022, 28yr-old Albert Donkor was picked up by policemen in a private car as a suspect in an armed robbery case at Nkoranza in the Bono East region.

Albert Donkor’s mother’s plea to accompany them to the police station was resisted by the Police.  After days of following up about Albert’s whereabouts, and being tossed around by police for 3 weeks, it later emerged he was shot dead by Police on the same day he was picked up.

The Police deposited his body in the morgue with an accompanying Police official statement which said Albert Donkor was an armed robber who was shot dead “during an operation”.

Nkoranza youth say the suspect/victim was targeted and killed by police because he witnessed an armed robbery involving policemen and had told someone who informed the policemen involved.

The youth clashed with the Police at the Nkoranza Police Divisional and Headquarters after the law enforcement agency in a statement described the late Albert Donkor as an armed robber.

Six suspects who were in police custody at the Nkoranza Police Divisional and Headquarters managed to escape when angry youth of the area attacked the stations over the death of 27-year-old businessman Albert Donkor, who was arrested and shot dead by the police.

Also, as a result of the attack, six people were injured by gunshots and sent to the St. Theresa’s Hospital, Nkoranza which one of them died while receiving treatment and five others are currently on admission and responding to treatment, according to the Hospital Authorities.

Two suspects have also so far been arrested in connection with the disturbances.
